Natural Monument—Chongbaek Juniper

Chongbaek juniper grows in Chongbaek-ri, Kumya County, South Hamgyong Province.

The tree, planted around the 1550s, is 10m tall and 5.4m wide at the root collar. The crown is 18m wide from east to west and 21m wide from north to south. The main trunk is divided into three trunks at the height of 0.5m, which are 2.6m, 2.1m and 2.2m wide, respectively. It looks like small clouds when seen nearby and a giant umbrella when seen from afar.

The tree is one of the tallest and oldest trees in the eastern coast of Korea. It is registered as a natural monument for its significance in studying the sizes and ages of junipers.
